Interested In A Factory-Built Or Prefabricated Fireplace Or Chimney?
Factory-built or “prefabricated” fireplaces are a great alternative to more traditional masonry fireplaces, offering many of the same benefits without all the expense. A to Z Chimney Services helps many homeowners around Sacramento by installing, updating, and repairing prefab units.
It’s important to hire a certified NFI technician to install or repair your factory-built appliance so that your unit will perform efficiently and safely—the way it was designed to. The last thing you want is to have your new unit incorrectly installed and then have to have it pulled out and redone because something was overlooked. Repairs, maintenance, and installations need to be done to spec every time on a prefabricated chimney system for the safest and most efficient use. Just like masonry units, taking care of factory-built units per the manufacturer’s guidelines and getting them inspected and swept annually will be the best money you will ever spend on your fireplace. A to Z Chimney Services can be there to care for your prefab hearth every step of the way.
Repairs & Installations
Over time, most all prefabricated chimneys will need to have certain parts replaced or repaired. This can present problems when dealing with older units that are no longer being made. That’s when having the ability to make custom parts for some of the more common repairs like chase covers or storm collars is a real plus. A to Z Chimney Services is also part of several larger organizations and can sometimes locate a supplier that may have a part that’s no longer manufactured; this is more common for firebox panels than any other part. We handle the following types of repairs and installation as related to factory-built fireplaces:
- Decorative Shroud Removal
- Chimney Caps
- Storm Collars
- Short Stacked Chimneys
- Chimney Height Violations
- Chase Pan Repair
- Chase Pan Replacement
- Zero Clearance Chimney Pipe Relining and Repair
- Firestop Installation
- Flashing Repair
- Refractory Panel Replacement
- Heat Reflector
- Gas Log Lighter Installation & Replacement
- Glass Doors
- Seal Decorative Facing to Firebox
- Fireplace and Firebox Repairs
- Water Damage to Prefab Fireplaces
Glass Doors On Prefabricated Or Zero Clearance Fireplaces
While glass doors for your fireplace are a nice luxury, if you have a prefabricated or zero clearance fireplace, there are some things you should know before spending your hard-earned dollars on a new set. Prefabricated fireplaces are a UL listed product, and the companies who manufacture these fireplaces are very specific about altering them in any way – this includes the installation of a set of aftermarket glass doors that are not original factory parts. What’s the big deal? The answer is simple: It could be a matter of life and death.
Prefabricated fireplaces are usually constructed of two different-sized sheet metal boxes with the smaller box built inside the larger outer box. In most prefabricated fireplaces, there is an air space located between the inner and outer boxes that is designed to allow cool air to circulate as fires are burned, thus keeping the outer sheet metal box as cool as possible. To allow the free passage of circulating air, louvers are usually located either above and below the firebox, or on either side of the firebox. When closed, these illegally installed aftermarket glass doors will severely restrict side air louvers’ ability to circulate cooling air. Cutting off or restricting this vital airflow may result in overheating your prefabricated fireplace to dangerously high temperatures.
As you can imagine, keeping the outer sheet metal box as cool as possible is very important because of all the combustible 2X4 studs that make up the structure of your home in close proximity to your firebox. Should the outer sheet metal box overheat, a fire could result, and because you altered the original factory design by adding an aftermarket set of glass doors, your insurance company may even deny your claim.
Call A to Z Chimney Services if your factory-built fireplace doors are broken, if your prefabricated or zero clearance fireplace does not have a set of glass doors, or if your existing glass doors are broken or missing. We’ll help you determine if factory-original glass doors or properly-fitted aftermarket doors are available for your fireplace, and give you prices accordingly. Please keep in mind, however, that some prefabricated fireplaces were never designed with glass doors or that the manufacturer may be out of business.

If you think clothes dryer fires aren’t real, think again! Many years ago I had a lovely home in the hills of the bay area. Returning from a shopping trip one day, I came home to a pile of smoldering rubble that used to be our house!
Apparently, the clothes dryer had ignited lint buildup and started the fire and we lost everything. After having learned such a painful lesson, I never leave the home with the dryer running.
Also, I make sure my Dryer Vent is cleaned on a regular basis by A to Z Chimney Sweep and Dryer Vent Cleaning. Dryer Vent Cleaning isn’t just a good idea…it’s CHEAP FIRE INSURANCE!!
