Prefabricated Fireplace & Fire Box Repairs
Just like any of your kitchen appliances, chimneys tend to wear out with use and time. Your fireplace’s firebox (the place where you build your fires) is no different.
Due to heat exposure and, oftentimes, water intrusion, the mortar that holds your firebox’s bricks together will eventually turn into a very sandy consistency. Sometimes, mortar becomes so eroded that gaps begin to appear between the bricks.
Eroded mortar joints and loose bricks in your firebox can quickly turn into an unsafe situation, so keeping your firebox in tip-top condition is very important.
When your firebox’s bricks are in sound condition and not loose, but the mortar holding them together is beginning to turn to sand or erode away, firebox tuck pointing is in order.
First, the affected sandy mortar joints are partially removed with a special diamond cutting blade. Once removed, the mortar joints are re-packed with high temperature refractory mortar.
Once the process is complete, you’ll get many more years of worry-free use out of your newly refurbished firebox.
Firebox Tear-out and Rebuild
If your firebox’s brickwork is loose, cracked, spalling, or in danger of collapsing, your firebox is too badly damaged for tuck pointing and must be torn out and a new firebox installed.
This is a big job, but rest assured, A to Z has the experience to make this a stress free, no-mess experience for you!
First, the bricks are removed with a demolition hammer (a miniature jack hammer).
Once the old firebox is removed, one of our expert masons will re-lay your new firebox one brick at a time using a high temperature fireclay mortar specifically designed to endure the high heat environment that is typical of a wood burning fireplace.
Once completed, you’ll enjoy many more years of fires worry free knowing the job was done right by A to Z!
P.S. Don’t forget the chimney cap, your chimney’s crown, and heat reflector!
A chimney cap and a crown in good condition will help keep out the damaging rainwater.
A heat reflector will dramatically reduce the amount of heat your new firebox is exposed to!
Spending a little extra money to protect your fireplace from water intrusion and heat exposure will prolong the life of your newly repaired firebox many fold!
Prefabricated fireplaces and chimneys are vulnerable to water damage, so ask A to Z to inspect your system and make any needed repairs before you develop more major and expensive problems.

Everything from your company has been done in a professional manner! The person who came out to sweep my chimneys answered all my questions with pictures and a book full of before and after pictures of the most commonly needed repairs, and I was very impressed. Later on, you came back out to install chimney caps on both fireplaces. I was very please with all your work. And yes, when I need another chimney cleaning, I’ll definitely use A to Z again. You are professional and I give you very high marks!
